AMPHI 2019 - NINE ADDITIONAL BANDS CONFIRMED!

After the first big bandpack the second wave is already rolling with another nine artists being added to the line-up. The real, the rare and three Amphi-debuts - please welcome:

NACHTMAHR + UNZUCHT + L'ÂME IMMORTELLE
RABIA SORDA + JANUS + PINK TURNS BLUE
MASSIVE EGO + SEADRAKE + FÏX8:SËD8

Jekyll and Hyde, romanticist and field commander. With Thomas Rainer contrast is programme! Whether as supreme commander of the NACHTMAHR army or alongside exceptional vocalist Sonja Kraushofer in L'ÂME IMMORTELLE - it is impossible to overlook the massive competence of over 20 years worth of stage-experience - most of them at the very forefront as Austria's most requested scene-export. For the first time since 2008 we will even have a double-feature at Amphi Festival with both bands performing shows! Don't miss it!

As we speak of duality: the mythologically founded epitome of the term two-face is of course being delivered by JANUS! The long anticipated comeback of Dirk Riegert and Tobias Hahn during Amphi Festival 2014 struck like thunder! They even played twice in front of a fully packed Theater, presenting their set in an acoustic-jazzrock outfit at that time. But JANUS would not be JANUS without already having a new gameplan prepared to reveal another engaging facet of their creative output! Expect the unexpected!

Erk Aicrag has never been shy of an energy-pumped show as well! The effervescent Mexican always goes all-in and excites audiences around the globe with his vivacious appearance. Within the musical confines of RABIA SORDA he currently merges electro beats and gripping industrial-rock into an electrifying symbiosis which, without question, is destined to create some serious stir at the Rhine!

PINK TURNS BLUE, whose origin roots in the Rhine-area of the year 1985, masterfully dwells the charming trinity of indiepop, wave- and postpunk influences. Uncoventional chords - timeless magic! We are very happy and honored to welcome this classic, lead by Mic Jogwer, for the first time ever at Amphi Festival.

Also for the first time the new synth supergroup SEADRAKE consisting of singer Hilton Theissen (Akanoid), Mathias Thürk (ex-Minerve) and Rickard Gunnarsson (Lowe, Statemachine) joins the Amphi line-up. For those among you who like it a tad bit darker, there is a sinister electro-slasher coming for you in the shape and body of FÏX8:SËD8! The project from Wiesbaden, as written and conceived by Martin Sane, melts influences of great electronic pioneers such as FLA, Skinny Puppy and Placebo Effect into a devilishly haunting blend.

Veni, vidi, vici might be the fitting slogan vor MASSIVE EGO! In 2017 the shimmering Brits conquered Amphi by storm and left a sustaining impression in many of you! Rightfully so, your wish is our command! Look forward to a new encounter with Marc Massive & Co. in July 2019!

OMD, Midge Ure and more confirmed for Amphi Festival 2018

An era in which we “audio cassette children” (instead of our smartphones) waited mesmerized in front of our radios, circling the record button with our forefinger until they finally played our favorite song! It was the great time of Synthpop, NewWave and that hint of avant-garde that turned pioneering spirit into a time of new heroes!

The festival organisers have announced OMD and MIDGE URE for the Amphi Festival 2018 – two of those exceptional artists who wrote music history worldwide.
Furthermore with GRENDEL, GRAUSAME TÖCHTER and SYNTHATTACK we also have fresh new entrances from the Industrial-Electro scene for you.

ORCHESTRAL MANOEUVRES IN THE DARK, short OMD, attracted impressive attention in 2017 with their album THE PUNISHMENT OF LUXURY on which Andy McCluskey, Paul Humphreys and Martin Cooper staged the characteristic OMD sound as a declaration of love for the pioneering spirit of the Düsseldorf School of electronic music. Unforgotten are of course the great OMD classics: "Enola Gay", "Souvenir", "Secret", "Sailing On The Seven Seas" and of course the number one hit "Maid Of Orleans" that became the best-selling single of the year 1982 in Germany! For us it is therefore a very special honor to welcome OMD at the Amphi Festival 2018.

The latter fully applies also to MIDGE URE. The likeable Scot landed an absolute coup in 2014 when he captivated the Amphi audience with his performance. Whether as co-founder of VISAGE ("Fade to Grey"), as voice of ULTRAVOX ("Hymn", "Vienna", "Dancing With Tears in My Eyes") or as solo artist ("Breathe", "If I was") - Midge Ure (OBE) is a true gentleman of pop who uses his popularity always for charity projects as well ("Live Aid", "Band Aid"). So the anticipation is rising on this great artist’s further performance at the Amphi Festival and the related pure goose bumps.

Granted, it’s not easy to find a fitting bridge from these giants of the 80s. Nevertheless, we insist on announcing two „new heros“ of the present as well, with the first of them being GRENDEL. The Dutch harsh-electro project around J.D. Tucker began to tread new ways with their recently released 2017 record "Age Of The Disposable Body". By changing the focus to an intriguing mix of industrial-pop elements, GRENDEL expanded their own universe with a refreshingly different vibe.

With their provocative blend of electropunk, industrial and performing arts, GRAUSAME TÖCHTER always draw some serious attention. Nevertheless you should not judge the book by its missing cover. Beneath the skin burns a rebellious fire, resurfacing the temper and anachism of the early punk scene. Relentlessly biting and cruel, Aranea Peel & co. mean business and thei are to give their first stand at Amphi Festival and we're pretty sure it won't last only for one night!

Closing today's announcement, we also welcome Hanover-based industrial formation SYNTHATTACK who will take Amphi Festival’s dance floor by storm with powerful beats and a thrilling show.

New acts announced for Amphi Festival 2018

The second wave of bands for the Amphi Festival 2018 is crashing in and impresses with its strong focus on variety. Cult formations go along with newcomers, as modern dark-rock meets neo-classical perfomance and cutting edge postpunk passes on the handle to an injection of fresh electropop:

AESTHETIC PERFECTION
GIRLS UNDER GLASS + UNZUCHT
LEBANON HANOVER + SOVIET SOVIET + PERSEPHONE
A PROJECTION + INTENT:OUTTAKE + LA SCALTRA
In-between massive beats and exciting industrialpop hymns AESTHETIC PERFECTION have found their musical home. After the Californians' highly acclaimed show at Amphi 2016, which went totally through the roof, Daniel Graves & Co. are to return next year, ready to instigate an extra load of mainstage mayhem!

Though having become comparably seldom, every concert of Hamburg-based scene-pioneers GIRLS UNDER GLASS turns even more into a special occasion with distinct cult status. Active since 1986, not by chance the darkwave legend around Thomas Lücke, Hauke Harms, Volker Zacharias and Axel Ermes counts to the most influential scene-formations of the 80s, who inspired many acts successful today, that maybe never existed without them!

Ever since their latest album "Neuntöter" the darkrockers UNZUCHT joined life on the fast lane. Amidst an undertow of honest statements and shattering riffs the Lower-Saxonians hit the nerve of the modern generation goth, carrying their audience with unrelenting grip.
LEBANON HANOVER are a phenomenon! Subversively elegant and surrounded by their own distinct magic, Larissa Iceglass und William Maybelline create a powerful spark from a chilling postpunk attitude, honed with minimalistic darkwave and hypnotic rhythms of undeniable immersion.

Almost completely opposite SOVIET SOVIET keep no holds barred when it comes to firing off a temperamental postpunk barrage. Like Jake LaMotta in his best days the Italians literally push forward like a raging bull - relentless - tireless - full speed ahead! While their albums "Fate" and "Endless" being instant classics, the trio rightfully received strong international acclaim and recognition. 2018 they are to guest at Amphi Festival 2018 for the first time!

It has been a long time coming with the German-Austrian neo-classical ensemble PERSEPHONE. Now Sonja Kraushofer (L' Âme Immortelle), Martin Höfert and their fellow musicians finally return to present "Perle", the highly anticipated follow up to their 2007 released album "Letters to a Stranger". Exceptional vocals meet instrumental finesse. Join in, listen and let yourself be taken to another world!

The creative work of Swedish rockers A PROJECTION again is set in the realm of smart postpunk, spiced with a notable indiepop injected. Emerging from the influences of bands like The Cure, Editors and Joy Division, the five-piece around singer Isak Eriksson cultivated their unique style. With the release of their early 2017 second album "Framework" the Scandinavians ranked themselves among the most promising genre newcomers.

Andreas Engleitner and Bastian Polak, also known as INTENT:OUTTAKE, fully dedicated themselves to the world of dark-electro. Ever since the release of their debut album "Wake-Up Call" the boys from Leipzig conquered the clubfloors by storm. Even in your festival-wishlists the duo received tremendous consideration and so we are happy to welcome Intent:Outtake for next year as one of the most requested newcomers at Amphi Festival.

"Is this witchpop?", you might ask yourself in search for a fitting drawer,  when LA SCALTRA sound the haunting melody of their current smasher "Cantate". Catchy, bittersweet and mysterious in themselves, Aeleth Kaven, Dae Widow and Jay Sharp radiate a fascinatingly abysmal magic by which the newcomers will take our Orbit Stage instantly.

Live: Amphi Festival - Köln, 25th – 26th July 2015

AMPHI FESTIVAL

Köln, Germany
25/07/2015 – 26/07/2015

Prologue

Its 2.00pm on an August afternoon. Glancing over gothic fashion in the pages of a financial Times supplement, I try gathering my thoughts of the gothic music calendar of this year.

Growing from a small festival that saw a few hundred patrons attend, Amphi festival transformed to a weekend that sees over 18,000 gather in black lace, rubber, cyber dreads and colours of all, not just from Europe, but the whole of the black globe, verifying the success and impact Amphi has had on the alternative scene. For it’s convenience in regards to transport & travel, family-friendly, as well as good quality has kept it in that stage for many years.

Friday
The weather looks dreary outside in Edinburgh, so no need for sun protection. With a quick shower, croissant and a strong black tar coffee it’s off to the airport. My charming Goth morning looks get me away with 3kg over the baggage limit (thank goodness for the tar coffee!). Now just past the x-ray to watch the security guard’s reaction to my New Rock’s and another festival is about to commence!

This year saw a change in the Amphi venue, from the legendary Tanzbunnen situated on the side of the Rhein; with its three stages and Goth patented Beach Club. Located nearby, the Laxness arena was chosen.

An impressive venue, when first glimpsed at online, maybe a bit too impressive in size for the Grufti culture to handle. However sometimes experiments must be made, in order to continue on improving the festival experience. Over the years the Tanzbunnen had become overcrowded, in certain situations, with issues such as rain creating problems for entry into certain stages, it could be seen that this was part of eliminating this issue.
So with a bit of ‘Aesthetische’s’ new promotional tracks blowing through the eardrum, the warm-up parties are under-way!

Call the Ship to port, was an impressive experiment of making use of the Rhein, as a floating warm-up venue, that has become a permanent add-on to the festival. Combine that with the new Alter Watersaal’s location in the Köln hafen complex, which hosts the official Amphi Festival warm-up party, improvements are being made every year. The Essig Fabrik was visited for the first time, breaking tradition and is a great warm-up substitute if wanting a change from the Depeche Mode Amphi Party.

Saturday – The Perfect Storm
The new venue did not get off to a flying start, literally… Köln that Saturday experienced seriously high storm winds, that led to the two outdoor stages including all the stalls being shut down until further notice. Mainly due to the possible capsizing disasters caused by triple platform boots!
The major issue created by the wind was a wave of disarray, which led to overcrowding within the laxness arena. There was really not enough clear signage in regards to the two outdoor stages and indoor stall area. However kudos must be given to Amphi management, for doing their utmost to tame the situation and create a solution to the health and safety hazard.

The end result led to the outdoor venues remaining closed, and having acts squeezed into the main Arena stage in order to get as many acts back on the list. There had been querying over the improvement of the vegetarian and vegan options available at Amphi this year. Either I was unaware to find them, though there seemed to be no change. It must be pointed out though, there was indeed a change in the variety of food available and I was happy with my Bratwurst and Met; and my personal EBM dance of joy was given to the introduction of Guinness!

The likes of D.A.F.’s Gabi Delgado brought down the drum to the beat with old skool EBM. The advantage of the Arena could already be seen, watching the Beer and body movements bring me back to Cold War, also reminding me I was missing out on fun in the pit!

Leaving Mussolini in the past, we travelled into dream world. Chibi let her pigtails go; drawing her audience to a place of cake, blood and wonderland dark swirls; as the Canadian project ‘The Birthday Massacre’ delivered a little slice of nightmare to the Arena. Flying around the stage, the band delivered purple and black romance of young splatter tales to the pit, and as an act to observe from the medium level was quite perfect. The songs covered the entirety of their work from the sewing up of ‘Pins & needles’ to the waltzing nightmare fairy-tale of ‘Lovers End’.

Whatever was left of the bloodcake, got finished off with Agonoize. They walked onto the stage; transforming the Arena into a church and preached gospels to a crowd that rose into a blood-coagulated tornado. Having the masses gathered at the Arena stage; the Guinness and met stand looked like boats from afar, becoming engulfed in a alcoholic energetic black wave. Chris,L ramped up the volume and cut-throat bass. Using the rage of his voice and dark joy, he worked the blood-lust of the disciples to his advantage. By now the floor was dashed in salt and muscle juice.

Front 242 made it onto the Main stage, an anticipation after not playing last year due the sound issues that plagued not only the Tanzbunnen’s main stage but that also of the Stattenhaus.

Sunday - We shall rebuild!
From a festival goers perspective having acts such as [:SITD:] so early in the morning, was an unfortunate solution due to time as well as knowledge of the rescheduling being short. Carsten did his best to salvage the scrap metal and bring a beast out with Slow deep pulsing EBM reactor. With the help of Chris. L, the crowd got their morning stomp in the face.

If any of all the bands that can make an amusing drama, the building lords ‘Patenbrigade: Wolff’ are the Kings of construction electronica. A few sight levels, orange visibility vests and we have ourselves progress and beer! Taking the light movement with their own patented style of music and there movement through the ages, the festival awoke from the grave and found some new life.

The Arena played to ‘Combichrist’s’ Joy of Gunz, with heavy drums and blasting bass, with a combined dash of guitars. Andy La Plauega has taken his project’s act much more metal in his performances, in comparison to previous live acts, a great performance to show off his Rammstein touring experience, for the gigantic venue.

‘Henric de la Cour’ was an exceptional act for the orbit stage, producing a meteor of synthetic waves, combined with guitar strings that left a lasting impression. An interesting group of zombified keyboardists and a single guitarist gave an amusing touch to the fantastic vocals and performance of their lead singer. For the first time seen all weekend, they electrified the crowd and for me made the best new act of the festival.

The lasting thoughts were that the orbit stage had the best vibe of the overall Sunday. The dense energy from the nearby stalls and light chitty chatting of the back, and Guinness at arm’s length was perfect.

Down Hill

I am over critical of sound and atmosphere; as I believe it is the secret key to most spectators, that these conditions will create the best for any act, producing the feeling of nerves standing up upon the skin to the right resonance that cannot be beaten.
For Diary of Dreams, I have seen them on previous occasions outdoor and regardless of sunlight, I am aware it can still make the night-time crawl in. I left the vicinity of the green stage, as I believed that if I listened to Adrian Hates any longer on stage under these conditions, my thoughts and place in my head for the band would be tarnished. The sound was far from acceptable if you were to listen not that far away. As much as props and the movement of artists can catalyse the mood, the sound is the greatest multiplier and in this case , negative.

Oomph came alive, opening with ‘Alles Aus Liebe’ for a packed black Arena. It had a mixed proportion of alive Oomph maniacs at front of stage, and a representation on the upper floors of a few tired looking faces recovering from Saturday. However still able to enjoy the sound of the industrial Goth rockers. For the Laxness Arena, here I could definitely see an advantage for this point in time, but it recreated the feeling of being in a Museum?

The orbit stage saw the acoustics of Rome reign in and feel the Neofolk force of Jerome Reuter, producing his ballad of fury and desolation of society amongst the blades of grass. Rome bestowed a clean chill of melodic rituals, of death and power, that erased the earlier sounds.

VNV Nation closed the Amphi epilogue for 2015, and by far was the best choice. Watching Ronan Harris perform his act and use the sheer size of the Coliseum before him to its full potential was spectacle at its finest. Engaging the crowd from the pit to the rafters the sheer volume of spectators was horrifying; at the same time what a fantastic adrenaline rush! The highest moment was seeing the darkness of the laxness arena become illuminated. Phones and lighters, brought the whole of Amphi together at, before the curtain closed until the following summer...

Epilogue aka The Post Morton
Monday came and over a spot of lunch including a strong cup of black resurrection, in the inner city of Köln, I compiled my thoughts of the Gothic long weekend.

Having two outdoor venues reduced the atmosphere for a lot of bands, which would have been better suited to indoor acoustic environment. The sound quality was dire if listening in the vicinity of the green stage. The orbit stage however was a good size; it did create overcrowding, but was made up by the quality of sound and overall feeling of the acts and atmosphere by dark festival goers.

The Arena was a spectacle, but only for the bands that would see the space being filled and for the music artists that had developed the skills to channel the audience from the stage, to the metal sky. I think also a festival such as the laxness arena may have positives with such are large seating area, however overall you felt very disconnected from it all and I did not come to a festival to sit and watch bands.

The Tanzbunnen, was a much better location, I believe the towering size of the laxness arena, reduced the feeling of the festival and caused claustrophobia outside. The ability to see a great distance over the whole festival at the previous grounds was only brought to my significance this year, and I believe produced a better feeling of black community. There was too much feeling of disconnection for it to be a festival for me .

Experiments are there for taking risks and seeing if a better result came and as much as it can be said the negatives were far greater this year. I am happy Amphi attempted it, as it shows innovation and a management that is alive and trying to improve on a great festival.

So To Next Year!

Interview: Die Krupps

The machinists travel guide...

"Berlin was cool when the wall was up, it had a special flare, I really liked the atmosphere, it was like whoever did not want to get the draft went to Berlin, and so it was very artistic. Nowadays it is just a big city without a centre."

Die Krupps has been manufacturing Musik fabrik for 30 years. A creation of steel worker hard bass and a production line rhythm, that seeks to move. Last year was marked by the ‘Machinists of Joy’album. A successful mixture of 90s electro year rock, with an en-laced feel from impounding fabrik bass and then lifted up with EBM technik.

It’s just gone past midnight on a hot Monday morning at Amphi Festival in Cologne. The Labyrinth of the Stattenhaus venue is quickly remembered, as Hermann (tour manager) takes us into the dressing room. After a performance that neared disaster with monitor failure at the beginning (also happening to Front 242 on Saturday), Die Krupps are lounging backstage. A combination of improvised percussion and determination, until the issue was fixed led to a successful performance.

So now it is time for me to answer the deep questions of...

Intravenous Magazine: So who is the best cook out of the lot?

Bradley: Totally not me! I’m a great cocktail mixer.

Marcel: I think Bradley is the best cook, but I’m good on cocktails.

Bradley: I'm a big bourbon fan, you should try ‘The Derby’. Really good bourbon like Basil Hayden 2oz, a spoonful of maple syrup & 1 Oz pineapple juice and a pinch of nutmeg. The Moscow mule I've been drinking a lot of recently.

Bradley’s Bar:
Moscow Mule
  •          Vodka
  •          Shot of lime juice
  •          Top off with Ginger Beer

Bourbon X

·         2Oz Basil Hayden's
·         1tbsp Maple Syrup
·         1 Oz Pineapple Juice
·         Shake it!
·         Dust with a pinch of Nutmeg

IVM: You should try an Islay Mule…
·         1part Islay peated Whisky
·         2 parts ginger beer
·         1 part lemon juice
·         Serve on ice cold.

or a Pain Killer.

Marcel: What is a Pain Killer?
  • 2-4 oz. of Pusser's Rum
  •  4 oz. pineapple juice
  • 1 oz. cream of coconut
  • 1 oz. orange juice
  •  Grated fresh nutmeg
(At this point I am assuming at least 50% of the band is surviving on alcoholic calories)

IVM: Do things like tonight's monitor sound failure irritate you?

Jürgen: Honestly I think you can use things like tonight to your advantage. If you keep the crowd informed, involve them and improvise, then it will work in your favour. I know it wasn't our fault, but issues can arise now and again.

IVM: What was the aspect of the 'Machinists Of Joy' album?

Jürgen: Essentially to bring out a Die Krupps album for all of the years, the only element we didn't include was the noisy part of the first album, all the rest is there. But now we are going to branch out again. At the moment new stuff is formulating, but we think some time in spring next year we'll work on it.

IVM: You are currently based in Austin Texas, when you are coming back to the continent do you feel the culture difference?

Jürgen: The only two places I've really liked on the continent are London and Moscow. But Austin is the best city in the world. It’s like the San Francisco and New York of the South, all mixed into one. Austin is the oasis of Texas and is really the music capital of the world, there is nowhere I’ve seen with  such a variety of live music, clubs and bars.

IVM: When did you first start coming over?

Jürgen: At the end of the 80s and then I moved to NYC in 1991 and then I saw Austin and found everything. The down town area has it all in one place from an industrial, reggae or rockabilly club, it’s all there in one place! The nature in Austin is like the South of France and if you love good food, you will be spoiled all the way!

IVM: What makes Berlin not cool any more?

Jürgen: Berlin was cool when the wall was up, it had a special flare, I really liked the atmosphere, it was like whoever did not want to get the draft went to Berlin, and so it was very artistic. Nowadays it is just a big city without a centre. Nuremberg is more of a medieval town with a huge castle enclosed with walls you should definitely go there. We actually were asked to play infest this year, but this is two weeks after Mera Luna and we can’t be touring 24/7, what’s it like there?

IVM: It’s a cool end of summer festival in the UK, it’s cheap to go to and very laid back. Everything is on the University of Bradford Campus, and includes a good turnout good variety of electronic orientated bands. Also has possibly the best Karaoke players the scene has to offer!

The corridor begins to resonate in low frequency. The last band downstairs, has come to the closing chapter of its performance. Looking back Jürgen finishes off speaking to a passing by music artist departing into the evening.

IVM:  What would Die Krupps do in a Zombie attack?

DK: Get up on stage and do a performance, see maybe if I could get some back vocal from them.

The interview has ended and so has Amphi. We trace our steps back through the West German structure returning into the Statennhaus theatre. The skeleton that once enveloped the Stage, has begun its deconstruction piece by piece, though the floor is still warm from boots and high heels.

The first glimpse of Die Krupps was at Amphi 2008, the blast of their metal pipes to' Der Amboss' hooked me to them, and seeing the history of the machine years continue on in success, just as Amphi has from then.

'The Machinists Of Joy' is available now via Synthetic Symphony / SPV. For more information on the band, including tour dates and future releases, please visit their official website.
