Review: Venal Flesh – 'Emulgent Disfigurement' (Single)

VENAL FLESH
'Emulgent Disfigurement'
JUGGERNAUT MUSIC GROUP

Dan Barrett of Worms Of The Earth unleashes his new harsh ebm project Venal Flesh in a big way with the searingly addictive 'Emulgent Disfigurement' single. Worms Of The Earth may have been better known for its rhythmic noise and dark ambient leanings, but Venal Flesh's penchant for dance beats and huge melodic synths bring out a new and more commercial strain of song writing that maintains his sinister atmospheres.

Kicking off with the title track, it's easy to hear the new projects influences. The likes of Suicide Commando, Hocico, Velvet Acid Christ and Aslan Faction are all instantly recognisable in this unashamedly dance-orientated number. The steady dance beats, acidic sounding melodies and distorted vocals may not be ground breaking, but they will definitely be lapped up by club-goers.

The b-side, 'Mizbehi (Blood Of Angels Upon My Altar)' on the other hand, slows things down with it's esoteric intro and channels the darker and more progressive style of Worms Of The Earth into the harsh ebm template. It shows that Venal Flesh isn't just going to be another dance-floor fixated one trick pony and that Barrett is bringing the full depth of his skill to this project.

The production is clean and crisp with an ever present distortion that keeps things sounding nice and dirty. It's clear that although Venal Flesh's influences are obvious, they're not merely treading the same path, but laying their own.

Fans of harsh/terror ebm will definitely need to keep an eye on Venal Flesh.
